CRYPTIK-ONE: Commandment Number 4. “Remember The Day Of The Sabbath And To Keep It Holy”. Do you think this is applicable for today in modern times?
EVE: In my opinion I would like to ask you a question, but first I would like you to tell me exactly what you would define as the modern times? You see, the Day of the Sabbath was created in 1500 B.C. when the Hebrews were slaves inside Egypt. The Sabbath day was their only day of joy on a regular basis. They were not allowed to work unless they were asked to perform menial labor for their king and slave masters. So for most of the time, months and years, as slaves, they were unable to observe/celebrate the Sabbath because they had to work. However, once Moses lead them into the desert of Sinai and later into the Promised Land, the Sabbath was no longer a popular cultural item; everyone’s schedule was disrupted with his new laws and rules. So I ask, is it necessary for today in these modern times where we are no longer slaves and are free to do as we wish. So do you agree that commandment Number Four (of Ten) does not apply to these modern times?
CRYPTIK-ONE: I do not agree that this number four commandment does not apply to modern times. I will tell you why. Genesis 2:2-3 “And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.” “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.”
EVE: I think the word that is your problem and where you are going wrong with this. The word “Sabbath” in Hebrew is defined as “Shabbat” – To cease from work, to rest; a day of rest. The original command was not to keep it holy. It was to cease from work. We no longer work in the same manner as we used to do. You see, in King Solomon’s time humans had to rest because manpower was exhausted. Nowadays we have machines which do all parts of the job in order to make our lives easier, so I believe that today, in modern times the commandment no longer applies. For example, if on Sunday which is the day that we honor Jesus Christ, or any other deity, if there is an ice storm and the power provider down in Georgia goes out. How can any TV station broadcast programming without electricity? Who will report the weather for us? Who will tell us about car accidents? Who will control traffic signals when they go out? Who will call 911/911 for help? I mean come on, what would we do to get a degree from a distance learning? So there are numerous reasons why early man had to work. They never had machines to help them therefore it was necessary for those men to put a “day of rest” into place just like Commandment Number One (of Ten) instructs us. So what you are trying to say is that people who observe Shabbat should do so because back in those days when people did not have help then they need the day off. It wasn’t necessary except for religious purposes such as having families gather together, read Torah scrolls etc. but nowadays thanks to machinery, innovations then there is no reason why we should have a day off. So if you agree with me then that bring you down to Commandment Number Five happening here shortly. OK please go ahead and tell us what Commandment number Four(of Ten) states.
CRYPTIK-ONE: 4/10 actually state “Remember The Day Of The Sabbath And To Keep It Holy”. “Remember this day” and to Keep it Holy. I agree with you that some people need to work on this day. However should they not “Remember” this day and should they not “Keep it Holy”?
EVE: It seems to me there are two things that you are trying to say: One, people should not forget the day. And what is the other thing you are saying?
CRYPTIK-ONE: To keep Sunday Holy.
EVE: But how can you keep something holy who’s purpose is to neither work or rest? You see, it’s the day that people who are not self-employed have off, so if we won’t work on a Sunday then what else would we do except worship.
CRYPTIK-ONE: You bring up a great point which can help us drill further down to the core of this commandment with our analysis. You can keep this day Holy by being on your best behavior, By praying, worshiping, offering praise and thanksgiving on this day (even if you need to report the weather or teach a distant learning course.
EVE: Ok, first off what you say makes sense; however we are not here to debate issues of morality. We are debating the Sabbath Holy Day. So let me remind you of something and then I will move on. The Sabbath is a day of rest, not a day for other activities like worship because God is not in the business of moral enforcement.
CRYPTIK-ONE: Hmm [Cryptik scratching his head with a baffled expression on his face], OK you do remember we are discussing the Ten Commandments here right?
EVE: Yes, I am fully aware of that. You said the obedient need not work on this day, which means the lazy people must work. Since the Sabbath enables us to worship then shouldn’t obedience also imply that we do so?
CRYPTIK-ONE: No I said that anyone working should still “remember” this day and “keep it Holy”. That’s all.
EVE: You see, that’s where you are missing the point. You said people that have jobs should “Keep it Holy”, not worship on it. In fact, I think that’s why God made the day even after the Sabbath.
CRYPTIK-ONE: They can go to work and worship in the same day can they not?
EVE: No. Not exactly.
CRYPTIK-ONE: I disagree. They can pray in their room in private (as stated in the Bible) and then go to work. They can keep that day Holy at work by being on their best behavior.
EVE: First off, you are wrong. That is not the purpose of the Sabbath. God gave Moses the Ten Commandments and among them was the “Remember The Sabbath Day And Keep It Holy.” command which He engraved on two tablets that he gave to Moses who, in turn, gave them to us who broke 1 of those 10 by failing to rest (Exodus 31:16-17). Second off, what you say gives no consideration to single mothers who have no alternate care giver (man) other than an infant or young child.
CRYPTIK-ONE: Can someone work and worship on the same day?
EVE: No.
CRYPTIK-ONE: Why not?
EVE: When God made the day he made it to be for rest and for worship. There’s a reason why we work to provide our family needs. We don’t live in a perfect world yet. Worship is an exclusive thing which happens in a concentrated time frame. You can’t mix worship and work on the same day.
CRYPTIK-ONE: So you can not get off work then come home eat dinner (bless and give thanksgiving for your food) and then say your prayers before you go to bed?
EVE: No. You just can’t do it. But you know something? God being the magnificent and wonderful guy that He is; before He gave Moses the Ten Commandments and asked us to remember this day, He already knew we would have jobs with responsibilities to family members. So He gave us the Day of Rest (Saturday), only to realize after it was too late, that some of us won’t be able to worship on Saturday, because we have jobs with family responsibilities. God is all-powerful and all knowing yet He changed His mind and realized that some of us needed a day of rest. I’m sure if more people prayed on Sunday than on Saturday, there would be less deaths from work related accidents, illnesses and etc. Let’s use common sense; nobody has ever been killed or injured from not praying.
CRYPTIK-ONE: Should someone get one day off work per week?
EVE:
CRYPTIK-ONE: Why not?

CRYPTIK-ONE: Should someone get one day off work per week?
EVE: Sure, that would be nice but you know what? If a person gets a day off from work, then who will watch over their children or elderly parents? What if they are sick?
CRYPTIK-ONE: Too many “What Ifs” Eve. I asked a simple question. Should someone get 1 day off from work each week? Yes or No?
EVE: YES!
CRYPTIK-ONE: Thank you. So they could be resting on that day? Correct?
EVE: Yes.
CRYPTIK-ONE: OK great. And how about going to Sanctuary. Can they also go to worship, give thanks, and praise to God and Jesus on that day?
EVE: Uh yes. Sure. They can also do that any day of the week and as often as they want to.
CRYPTIK-ONE: Right. So back to Commandment Number 4. “Remember The Day Of The Sabbath And To Keep It Holy”. Now this can be achieved for all right. And people will still get their weather report, coffee, and distant learning degree. Right?
EVE: (Rolling her eyes).
CRYPTIK-ONE: Right? (Smiling with a slight smirk)
EVE: Look. This is about worshiping and rest, not gaining a degree. Do you realize how ignorant you sound? Then again if you need to be condescending so you can defend your narrow mind, so be it.
CRYPTIK-ONE: Wait a second here miss Eve. You are the one who said people still need to report the weather, car accidents. etc. etc.
EVE: No. Look up Ecclesiastes 3:22 ” 22 For what has a man from all his labor
Matthew 5:17-18, Jesus says, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

One of my few connections with current human culture is the internet. I spend much time browsing websites to observe social and cultural patterns. Using an attractor which compels people to travel, I also monitor and collect resources from the physical planet. One day I will harvest them for my own use as well. (Written by Eve for me. I am going with it.)
